Camouflage is a camouflage uniform that uses color blocks to make a soldier's form resemble the background color.

Camouflage uniforms were first used by the British Army in December 1864 when British Captain Harry Barnett Ramsdin organized the British Army Reconnaissance Corps, an irregular army, in the Peshawar region of Pakistan. When making the uniforms of the reconnaissance party, Ramsdin selected the earthy yellow uniforms for the characteristics of the exposed loess and sand in the area, and for easy camouflage during reconnaissance. In later combat operations, this uniform really played a better camouflage effect.

In 1929, Italy developed the world's first camouflage uniforms, which had four colors: brown, yellow, green and yellow-brown. 1943, Germany equipped some soldiers with 3-color camouflage uniforms. This multi-color camouflage uniform, which was made up of 3-color patches with irregular shapes, not only resembled the background color, but also distorted the human shape in visual effect, thus achieving the effect of camouflage deformation. Later, the armies of various countries followed suit and improved the color of camouflage uniforms and the shape of the patches.

After the 1960s, the newly developed camouflage uniforms were made of synthetic chemical fibers, which were not only superior to the original cotton material in preventing visible light reconnaissance, but also had a certain camouflage effect of preventing infrared light reconnaissance because of the special chemical substances mixed into the color dyes, which made the infrared light reflecting ability of camouflage uniforms roughly similar to the reflecting ability of surrounding scenery. Nowadays, camouflage is not only used on soldiers' uniforms and helmets, but also on various military vehicles, tanks, artillery, airplanes and other military equipment, which are commonly painted with camouflage.
